Navihanke - Slovenian tunes medley

This is a nice medley of some popular Slovenian tunes, performed by ensemble Navihanke. All the members of this band are young ladies, still students.

Enjoy! :)

Euro Kvintet

Prekmurska gibanica, traditional food from Pre...Image via WikipediaIt used to be that the first tunes by new ensembles weren't all that good and it usually took them a while to break through and become popular or have a hit song.

I just heard the Euro Kvintet for the first time at one of the recent festivals in Slovenia (the truth is - I don't really know how long they have been around) - but their playing (I'm talking about the instrumental part of the song below) is absolutely superb and a real pleasure to listen to.

I like their name as well - no need to translate, it's international... :)

Check them out for yourself - Euro Kvintet with "V glasbi domači ni meja" (translation of the title would be something like: there is no limits to the folk music):

And the list of Euro Kvintet members:

  • Damjan Pasarič - harmonika (piano accorion)
  • Aleš Lubi - kitara (guitar)
  • Tomaž Podlesnik - bariton (baritone)
  • Mitja Skočaj - klarinet (clarinet)
  • Aljoša Jurkošek - trobenta (trumpet)
  • Maja Lavrin - vokal (vocal)

In a year or two...

This is an example of two popular pop singers Špela Grošelj and Domen Kumer singing a nice Slovenian waltz Čez leto ali dve (In a Year or Two). One more proof how excellent vocals can make a huge difference in popularity of certain genre of music.

The lyrics go something like that in Slovenian:

Čez leto ali dve
bo drugače vse,
le ljubezen najina še bo trajala...

And in English:

In a year or two
everything will be different
only our love will still last...

Unique accordion

The new season of Slovenia's Got Talent (SIT - Slovenija ima talent) seems to be the talk of the last few days in Slovenia. Poplular and well known folk ensemble Azalea was one of the performers that caught the most attention with their performance and this unique accordion (see photo below).

Ensemble Azalea at Slovenia's Got Talent (Slovenija ima talent) - Foto: Dejan Vrtačnik
The four members of Azalea performed the song Poison in some kind of polka-rock style and the audience loved them - and so did the three judges. Good luck, Azalea!

Here's a video with another polka by ensemble Azalea - from one of the folk music festivals in Slovenia (2. festival za Veliko nagrado Dolenjske, Šentjernej 2010):

Srečen - Happy

"Srečen" - Happy - is one of those things that probably every human being wants to be - as much - or as often - as possible.

Some recent events reminded me again how irrelevant so many things we tend to worry about in life are and I am now even more determined to stay focused on the bright side of my life.

That's why I decided to share some happiness with this happy polka, performed by an excellent Slovenian ensemble "Novi Spomini." I very much admire them for the incredible vocals.

Enjoy: "Srečen" (Happy) and "Novi Spomini" (New Memories)!

Name Day tradition in Slovenia

In Slovenia, the Name Day - "god" in Slovenian, is still way more important to a lot of people than their birthday - and that's what they celebrate every year. Just last night Nežka was telling me about the Name Day tradition in the village near Domžale, where she comes from.

In my early years, the traditional celebrations haven't been a significant part of my life - although I lived in a small village with around 600 residents, scattered around pretty large area. But my mom was a teacher and my dad was a journalist and they both worked all days. Therefore, when other kids spent their out-of-school time on the fields, pastures and woods or in the barns, I was with either of my grandmothers - pretty far away - or on the beach.

A few minutes ago I came across a post on FaceBook, saying that today is "god" - the Name Day of all whose name is "Jože, Jožica, Joci, Pepi, Pepca..."

I can easily imagine that tonight is about to be a party night for a lot of Slovenians because these are all very common names and "veselice" will happen in private homes and public places.

Let's join in the party with this lively polka "Ljubim Jožico" (I Love Jožica) performed by one of my favorite Slovenian bands, Donačka.

"Lepo praznujte" (happy celebration)! :)

Saturday dance with Frank Moravcek from Cleveland, Ohio

Suncoast SNPJ Lodge 778 - Slovene-American Club in Spring Hill hosted its traditional February dance with Frank Moravcek from Cleveland, Ohio, this Saturday, February 26, 2011.

Photo above: Linda Hochevar and Frank Moravcek

The music was good, the hall was full and people seem to have fun. Yet another event is 'under the roof' while the 2010/2011 season of events with Spring Hill SNPJ Lodge is fast approaching its end. Only one more weekend to go - with the biggest event of the year 2011.

If you were at the Spring Hill Hall on Saturday night, you might see yourself dancing in the video below and in case you weren't, you might recognize some people who were enjoying themselves.

Alex Meixner Band instead of Polka Quads

Florida native flowerImage by sunflower19020 via FlickrAbout a week ago Polka Quads (they were supposed to play at the Spring Hill Hall on Saturday and Sunday - March 5 and 6) had to cancel their participation in Suncoast SNPJ Lodge 778 biggest event of the year - Florida SNPJ Days 2011. Here's what John Salov, the band leader of Polka Quads sent to me in an email:

Daria:

It breaks my heart to cancel but all 3 0f my guys (2 because of work and 1 guys daughter is playing softball in Kentucky) could not make it. These things just came up and I shed tears over it. You people have been good to the Quads and I apologize from the bottom of my heart.

Please pass this info on to anybody who asks.

Again I am sorry but I can't come there without my best band.

I hope this clears up any rumors that you have heard.

John Salov - Polka Quads

Therefore, our three day weekend - Florida SNPJ Days 2011 on March 4 - 6 will now go as follows:

  • Friday, March 4, 20011: All day jam session with Pete November from Ohio from 1 to 6 pm. Admission $5, for jammers who bring in instruments and participate in one of the jam sessions admission is FREE. All instruments welcome. To play as a group, sign up by calling Daria at: (727) 753-9631. As always, polka and waltz dancers (and your family and friends) are more than welcome as well!
  • Saturday, March 5, 2011: Alex Meixner Band from 6 to 10 pm. Admission $10.
  • Sunday, March 6, 2011: Alex Meixner Band from 2 to 6 pm. Admission $10.
.
.
As always, food and cash bar will be available. For any further information and reservations call Daria (phone number above).

For those of you who don't know Alex Meixner or have never heard him play before, he is a Grammy nominated musician and producer - and here's the description of his music performance I found on his website:

Alex Meixner carries on a Family Tradition of music brought to the USA by his Austrian great grandfather. Building upon this foundation and extensive performances/ touring with his father in The Al Meixner Trio for many years, Alex has developed a fresh musical voice that has made him one of the most exciting performers on the American polka scene.
Alex’s high energy performances of everything from old time polkas and waltzes to more jazz and pop influenced repertoire has won over audiences throughout North America and continues to attract new fans. Equally at home with traditional and contemporary styles, performances on about a dozen instruments (including the 12 foot long Swiss Alphorn and trademark Meixner Button Box sound) and vocals in English, German, Slovenian, Croatian, Czech and more- the band’s reputation continues to grow.

From dynamic polkas and waltzes to Gypsy folk songs to Rocktoberfest parodies, Swing, Latin and Country dance music- the dizzying array of music is perfect for everything from World Music Concerts and family friendly folk festivals to a frenetic non-stop dance party.
.
.
And if you want to find out more still, here's the video (no video, sorry!) of Alex Meixner, playing Schwadamo Polka.
.

.

.
.
Actually, Alex has such a unique way of playing accordion that I decided to add another video just so you can see him performing live. Besides accordion he also plays several other instruments, all with equal passion. Of course, to really experience his music, the best way would be to come to Spring Hill first weekend in March and check him out for yourself - and meet Alex Meixner in person.
.
.

.
.
Before finishing my morning cup of hot chocolate soy milk and wrapping this post up - I'd like to thank in advance to everyone who volunteered to help me with all the tasks for Friday, March 4 jam session, to all of you who helped me promoting Suncoast SNPJ Lodge 778 events since last Thanksgiving, and all of you who are planning on coming to our events. I appreciate you all more than words can say!

Folk Rock - Narodnozabavni Rock

Slovenian Eurovision Song Contest (EMA) took place on February 21st of 2010. An overwhelming winner was the song "Narodnozabavni rock" (Folk Rock or Polka Rock), performed by two groups:

  • popular folk band "Ansambel Roka Žlindre" (Rok Žlindra Ensemble) and
  • popular rock band "Kalamari" (Calamari)
The tune is an interesting mix of button box - pop - polka music and rock rhythm which obviously took hearts of Slovenian tele-voters (audience voting via phones).

Photo above: Jože Jež - Pepi, "Kalamari" vocal and Barbara Ogrinc, "Ansambel Roka Žlindre" vocal after winning Slovenian Eurovision Song Contest (EMA) at "Gospodarsko razstavišče" in Ljubljana

On May 29, the selected Slovenian contestant will compete at the finals  of the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo, Norway - if they make it through the semi-finals.

Video above: "Narodnozabavni rock" tune performed live in Ljubljana on February 21, 2010

According to Rok Žlindra, the members of his folk ensemble will stay authentic and in Oslo perform in Slovenian ethnic clothing, like they always do.

After winning EMA contest in Ljubljana, the winners stated that it's time for the European pop audience to experience the sound of button box music - which they will deliver.

In the recent years button accordion once again became so widely popular with all generations of musicians all across Slovenia that some people are saying they wish for some more piano accordions at the folk festivals.

Good luck to "Ansambel Roka Žlindre" and "Kalamari."

Oto Pestner

Oto Pestner is my all times favorite Slovenian singer with beautiful voice, no matter what kind of music he is singing. I haven't heard this melody (in the video below) in the past ten years and today someone posted it on Facebook. It made me quite happy and here I'm sharing it with You: Oto Pestner and "Ljubim te, Slovenia" (I Love You, Slovenia).

And if you're not a fan of Slovenian pop music, here's the waltz version of the same tune, this time performed by vocals Oto Pestner and Ivanka Kraševec, both members of "Alpski Kvintet" or "Alpen Oberkreiner."

Festival Slovenian Polka and Waltz

I'm on my laptop, waiting for the "16. festival SLOVENSKA POLKA IN VALČEK" (16th Festival Slovenian Polka and Waltz) to start live on TV Slovenia 1. 14 new tunes, all performed live, straight from the crib of the Cleveland-Style... :)

"Festival SLOVENSKA POLKA IN VALČEK" is the biggest folk music event in Slovenia and the winning groups (one in Polka and one in "Valček" - Waltz category) usually become very popular overnight. Then their tunes are playing often on the local and national radio stations, they get invitations to perform in most watched TV shows and other folk groups play tunes of the year at dances all over the country and abroad.

If you're up to listening to some good polka music, here's the link that will take you directly to the video (unfortunately, Slovenian National TV website did not provide the embed code for the show). So, click below, this link opens a new window and starts playing after a few moments:
Festival Slovenian Polka and Waltz

This year, Festival Slovenian Polka and Waltz also stirred quite a buzz on Facebook. Many participating ensembles were inviting their FB friends to come to the live event - or at least vote for them via tele-voting.

We will hear 14 new tunes, performed live at "Marmorna dvorana (Marble Hall) - Gospodarsko razstavišče" in Ljubljana.

The show began with last year's winners, "Ansambel Roka Žlindre" and their Slovenian Waltz 2009: Del srca and "Ansambel Golte" and their Slovenian Polka 2009: Če te luna nosi.

  13. Zaka' pa ne (And why not) - waltz "Pridi nazaj" (Come back)
  14. Vihar (Storm)- polka "Še čakam te" (I'm still waiting for you)
For ten minutes Slovenians can vote for their favorite tune from stationary and mobile phones.

The panel of judges, three generations of 5 professional musicians chose:
  • best lyrics: Donačka - waltz "Vem, da nisem sama" (I Know I'm not Alone)
  • best trio: Novi spomini (New Memories) - polka "Fičfirič" (Good-for-nothing)
  • best quintet: Donačka - waltz "Vem, da nisem sama" (I Know I'm not Alone)
While waiting for the votes, absolute winners of  "Festival SLOVENSKA POLKA IN VALČEK 2005"  - Zlati muzikanti (Golden musicians) are playing their winning tune "Berač" (Beggar).

Then, vocalist Irena Verčkovnik, celebrating 20th anniversary of her performing, joins "Zlati muzikanti" and sings with them the famous waltz "Jadraj z menoj" (Sail with me) by Slavko Avsenik.

Štajerskih 7 (The 7 from Štajerska Region) are next on the stage with one of the most beautiful Slovenian waltzes - "Pesem zvonov" (Song of the bells).

Nuška Drašček joins them to sing "Venček polk" (Polka Medley) with them.

The new best Slovenian polka for 2010 is:
Novi spomini (New Memories) - polka "Fičfirič"

And new best Slovenian waltz for 2010 is:
Iskrice (Sparks) - waltz "Sedem let sva se ljubila" (We loved each other for seven years)

Now it's time for the second round of tele-voting during which the listeners are voting for the absolute winner - one of the above two.

In the meantime, Ansambel Franca Miheliča is playing "Slovenski venček" (Slovenian Medley). In 2010 they celebrate their 45th anniversary.

Time to announce the group that received most tele-votes -
Absolute winners of this festival:

Slovenian Waltz 2009

While I'm working on videos and photos taken at the last three events, here's some more popular "narodno-zabavna glasba" (folk music), made in Slovenia.

For today I chose for you Slovenian Waltz of the year 2009 "Del srca" (Piece of Heart) by a very successful and popular, young Slovenian ensemble: Ansambel Roka Žlindre (Rok Žlindra Ensemble)

Rok Žlindra (band leader and button accordion player) wrote 40+ or his own melodies and the group is about to release the third CD. Rok Žlindra Ensemble won several awards for their tunes.

And another waltz video spot by the same group: Ansambel Roka Žlindre - "Srce pa še vedno hrepeni" (Longing Heart)

Slovenian Polka 2009

I'll be away for a few days so I'm sending some energizing Slovenian music your way. :)

First, here's best Slovenian polka of 2009 by Ansambel Golte (Golte Ensemble):
"Če te luna nosi"

The title seems kind of difficult to translate - it's something like "Moonwalking" - you know, the kind that happens to men who are totally in love and all they can see and think about are their sweetheart's hands, touching them.

And if you like Ansambel Golte, here's another one of their polka videos "Če je ljubezen greh" (If love is a sin). It's a happy tune, which is obvious from the video part.

Enjoy the happy music, have the most beautiful weekend and keep smiling!! :)

Slovenian Style Polka Music

If you have an hour to spare and you're in a mood for some good Slovenian style polka music, watch the video below.  Underneath the video I am including a short transcript (since the whole thing is in Slovenian language), the list of performers and some information about the musicians.

Please let me know if you enjoyed this post. In case I get a good feedback, I'll do something like this again, soon.

Video above - Slovenian style polka music: "Polka in Majolka" (Polka and Maiolica) TV show, recorded at the Faraon (Pharaoh) Hotel in Celje - Part 1

Commercial time is very limited, there's some talking in Slovenian - but for the most part, lots of good polka music by seven polka bands and one individual diatonic accordion player. Enjoy!! :)

  • @ 01:50 new theme song for the 2010 "Polka in Majolka" (Polka and Maiolica) TV show, performed by "Ansambel Azalea" (Azalea Ensemble) and "Navihani muzikanti" (Naughty Musicians)
  • @ 05:50 waltz "Na Golte" by "Ansambel Golte." Golte Ensemble comes from the area or Mount Golte, also a popular ski resort. One of their polkas was awarded the title "most popular polka of the year 2009."
  • @ 10:55 polka "Vroča kri" (Hot blood) by "Ansambel Golte."
  • @ 14:10 polka "Zasuči me" by "Navihanke" (Naughty Girls) - all-girls college students band. The song is about dancing: turn, turn, turn me around...
  • @ 19:33 polka "Študentska je težka" (Students' Life Is Tough) - by "Navihanke." The title of this tune appears to be descriptive enough - it's about the difficult life of the students, especially after too much partying and exams approaching... :)
  • @ 23:25 polka "Moja šoferka" (My She-Chauffeur) by "Mladi godci" (Young Fiddlers) from Horjul.
  • @ 32:47 polka "Naj pesem zazveni" by the legendary vocalist Rudi Šantel and his "Šank kvintet"
  • @ 36:21 polka by "Družina Ferme" (Family Ferme) from Vrhnika (also the town where the most famous Slovenian doughnuts come from). Ferme family is likewise known for manufacturing of button accordions ("Goti" brand). Each of the members (father, two sons and a daughter) plays several instruments.
  • @ 43:10 another polka by "Družina Ferme" - talking about the tough times dad has when his daughter is growing into a young woman.
  • @ 46:55 polka by young diatonic accordion player Domen Hohler. He first started playing button accordion three years and a half ago.
  • @ 50:07 polka performed by "Ansambel Križman" (Križman Ensemble). The band leader (accordion player) is Slovenian, born in Australia. He recently returned to Slovenia and started his own band. To cope with the cold, he goes to the sauna every day - and wears gloves... :) He also writes all the music - and lyrics are put together by band's guitarist, Valentin Antonio.
  • @ 55:43 polka "Moj napev" (My Tune) by "Ansambel Križman"

Glas harmonike

The second tune that received the title of

"2009 Greatest All-Time Hit Song"
(2 elected)
at the XXII Polkas International Award Show in Cleveland, Ohio
is also a waltz
GLAS HARMONIKE
or
THE HAPPY ACCORDION
by famous Slovenian composer and band leader Lojze Slak.

In the video below, Bobby Kravos with Walter Ostanek and the Boys In The Band was kind enough to perform it for me while playing at our SNPJ 778 Spring Hill hall on January 30:
.
.

.
.
Glas harmonike waltz has been widely performed and recorded by button box groups and polka bands across the Cleveland-Style music scene.

In 1970 the Lojze Slak Trio from Slovenia, with vocalists Fantje s Praprotna toured the United States. Lojze Slak managed to bring old-fashioned button box music to the forefront with the polkas and waltzes he wrote and played on the diatonic accordion, and instrument that was popular between the World Wars.

In 1973 Fanika Pozek wrote lyrics about the sound of the accordion and Lojze Slak was so enraptured  by the words that he immediately composed a melody for "Glas harmonike." The waltz became the title song of Slak's new album.

Glas harmonike quickly became a sing-along favorite, transcending the limits of language with the uplifting "la-la-la" refrain.

In the U.S., Cecilia Dolgan restyled the Slovenian lyrics into English and captured a new audience for the tune under the name of "The Happy Accordion." Many button box players have made it a standard in their repertoires.

In the next video, there's Glas Harmonike again, this time performed by well established Slovenian ensemble Spev. Beautiful singing, typical Slovenian landscape and traditional architecture - and (of course!) the one thing that's never missing in any kind of Slovenian celebration - vino (wine). Check it out, it's well worth seeing! :)
.
.
.
.
Slovenian lyrics to Glas Harmonike waltz:

Nocoj je glas harmonike
spomine spet predramil.
Nekoc ta glas mehak in blag,
srce mi je omamil.
Le da tedaj je ta napev
bil mnogo, mnogo bolj vesel.
In fant, ki je takrat igral
si mene je izbral.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la...
.
.
The last video in today's post was taken this past Thanksgiving at the Awards Show XXII at Slovenian National Home in Cleveland, Ohio. "Glas Harmonike" for the third time - performed by Kathy Hlad (button accordion), Mi Smo Mi Mens Choir & Cecilia Dolgan. Lyrics sang in Slovenian by Mi Smo Mi first and then in English by Cecilia Dolgan.
.
.
.
.
English lyrics to Glas Harmonike (The Happy Accordion) waltz:

Tonight the old accordion plays,
So very sweet and tender,
The songs we used to sing-along,
When we were young, remember?
The memories of days gone by,
And happy times together,
Still echo like this melody.
Come sing-along with me.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la...
I love to hear an accordion play,
Singing and dancing the night away.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la...
Join in the crowd as we gather 'round
The Happy Accordion sound.

For the last nine days or so I've been fixing and uploading these videos and now that they are all live/published online, they deserve to be seen, especially by the people (You!) - who are in these videos.

They all turned out pretty good so I'm listing them all here for you just might see yourself dancing... :)

Click on the title of the tune and a new window with that particular video will open.

Bob Kravos - Happy Birthday!!

We had great crowds and lots of fun with Bob Kravos, Walter Ostanek and The Boys In The Band on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at our SNPJ Spring Hill hall.

Photo above: Bob Kravos (accordion), Walter Ostanek (accordion) and John Gerl (drums) playing at SNPJ 778 Spring Hill

Since January 30th is also Bob's birthday and he had to play to himself by himself on his special day, I asked him to play his favorite tune. He chose Moje dekle, beautiful Slovenian folk song.

So, this video below is what all of us created together: Bob Kravos and The Boys In The Band with their music, some ladies with pompoms and baloons, dancers and those who came to just sit and enjoy the happy polka music, all the volunteers making sure everything ran smoothly and myself with my Flip camera:

Video above: Bob Kravos, Walter Ostanek and The Boys In The Band playing Moje dekle, the opening of the dance at Suncoast Dance and Party Center in Spring Hill

This was the beginning of fun evening. We again had quite a few new visitors and before we wrapped things up, many people stopped at my table and thanked me for the hospitality and good times they had. That was very heart-warming, thank you all!

Another thing that made my heart sing was seeing John, helping Nezka at the bar again. Thank you both, John and Doris  Laurich for your help on Saturday. We all missed you very much!!

If you're reading this and are not yet subscribed to SNPJ 778 - Slovene-American Club in Spring Hill newsletter, I'd like you to know that there are two ways to subscribe - and never miss another dance at our hall:

  1. Use the form in the side bar (top right) or
  2. Take a look at the ticket you received when you paid for your admission. On the back of the ticket there's my email - send me a note and I'll add your name and address to the list of subscribers.
Thank you all for coming, for enjoying the food, dancing and music, thank you for buying the raffle tickets and thank you for visiting this website. I'll be adding more stuff daily (have a lot more photos and videos). The latest post is always at the top of the page.

And... one more time: Happy Birthday, Bob Kravos!! :)
