92 minutes of Slovenian music

This is a  New Year Eve's show "Videomeh" with Slovenian polkas and waltzes, singing at its best by the legends of Slovenian folk and pop music scene, hosted by two popular hosts and singers, Boris Kopitar and Nuša Derenda. 


Other popular vocals some of you might recognize are: Alfi Nipič, Oto Pestner and Elda Viler. Of course Slovenian music show would not be Slovenian without the music by Slavko Avsenik and Lojze Slak. There are a few other bands and individuals worth hearing in that show but I'll let you be surprised. Oh, and there are only a few commercials in that show, produced by Slovenian National TV 1.

Alex Meixner Band instead of Polka Quads

Image by sunflower19020 via FlickrAbout a week ago Polka Quads (they were supposed to play at the Spring Hill Hall on Saturday and Sunday - March 5 and 6) had to cancel their participation in Suncoast SNPJ Lodge 778 biggest event of the year - Florida SNPJ Days 2011. Here's what John Salov, the band leader of Polka Quads sent to me in an email:

Daria:


It breaks my heart to cancel but all 3 0f my guys (2 because of work and 1 guys daughter is playing softball in Kentucky) could not make it. These things just came up and I shed tears over it. You people have been good to the Quads and I apologize from the bottom of my heart.


Please pass this info on to anybody who asks.


Again I am sorry but I can't come there without my best band.


I hope this clears up any rumors that you have heard.

For those of you who don't know Alex Meixner or have never heard him play before, he is a Grammy nominated musician and producer - and here's the description of his music performance I found on his website:

Actually, Alex has such a unique way of playing accordion that I decided to add another video just so you can see him performing live. Besides accordion he also plays several other instruments, all with equal passion. New Year's Dance with Bob Turcola

Last Sunday, on January 2, 2011, SNPJ Lodge 778 in Spring Hill hosted the New Year's Dance with Bob Turcola for the second time in a row. The five-piece band sounded great and so did the jammers who took the stage twice. The attendance was decent and everyone had fun. Here are some photos I took at this first successful event of the season at the Slovenian-American Club's Spring Hill Hall.

Timeless Slovenian Waltz

"Jadraj z menoj" (Sail with me) is one of the most famous Avsenik's waltzes of all times and has been around for many years.

Still, this is also one of those evergreen, timelessly young and fresh melodies that are always new-like - when performed by another talented ensemble.

I instantly fell in love with one of the latest versions of  "Jadraj z menoj" (Sail with me), performed for the first time at 2010 "16. festival SLOVENSKA POLKA IN VALČEK" (16th Festival Slovenian Polka and Waltz) by "Zlati muzikanti" (Golden Musicians) and popular vocalist Irena Verčkovnik. Hope you like it, too...

Here it is, some summer romance in a form of Slovenian waltz and video of sailing on Adriatic Sea, especially for you. :)

Glas harmonike waltz has been widely performed and recorded by button box groups and polka bands across the Cleveland-Style music scene. 

In 1970 the Lojze Slak Trio from Slovenia, with vocalists Fantje s Praprotna toured the United States. Lojze Slak managed to bring old-fashioned button box music to the forefront with the polkas and waltzes he wrote and played on the diatonic accordion, and instrument that was popular between the World Wars.

In 1973 Fanika Pozek wrote lyrics about the sound of the accordion and Lojze Slak was so enraptured  by the words that he immediately composed a melody for "Glas harmonike." The waltz became the title song of Slak's new album.

Glas harmonike quickly became a sing-along favorite, transcending the limits of language with the uplifting "la-la-la" refrain.

In the U.S., Cecilia Dolgan restyled the Slovenian lyrics into English and captured a new audience for the tune under the name of "The Happy Accordion." Many button box players have made it a standard in their repertoires.

In the next video, there's Glas Harmonike again, this time performed by well established Slovenian ensemble Spev. Beautiful singing, typical Slovenian landscape and traditional architecture - and (of course!) the one thing that's never missing in any kind of Slovenian celebration - vino (wine). Bob Kravos - Happy Birthday!!

We had great crowds and lots of fun with Bob Kravos, Walter Ostanek and The Boys In The Band on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at our SNPJ Spring Hill hall.

Since January 30th is also Bob's birthday and he had to play to himself by himself on his special day, I asked him to play his favorite tune. He chose Moje dekle, beautiful Slovenian folk song.

So, this video below is what all of us created together: Bob Kravos and The Boys In The Band with their music, some ladies with pompoms and baloons, dancers and those who came to just sit and enjoy the happy polka music, all the volunteers making sure everything ran smoothly and myself with my Flip camera:

This was the beginning of fun evening. We again had quite a few new visitors and before we wrapped things up, many people stopped at my table and thanked me for the hospitality and good times they had. That was very heart-warming, thank you all!

Another thing that made my heart sing was seeing John, helping Nezka at the bar again. Thank you both, John and Doris  Laurich for your help on Saturday. We all missed you very much!!

Linda Hochevar is a beautiful lady with a life-long passion for polka music. Also and excellent dancer, she plays button box accordion playfully and with ease. To anyone who observes Linda Hochevar playing, button box looks like a lot of fun.

Linda Hochevar has learned how to dance polka in the kitchen of her home - like most children of Slovenian heritage in United States - and soon started learning how to play some instruments under the influence of her Slovenian father and polka musician.

Waltz of Love

I've been waiting for an opportunity to take a video of someone playing the Waltz of Love since last Thanksgiving.

Finally, this Saturday (January 23, 2009) Frank Moravcik with his group of musicians granted my wish and here's the result to enjoy - for everyone who loves one of the most romantic Cleveland-Style songs of all times - that received the title of

"2009 Greatest All-Time Hit Song"

The song was originally written in 1965 by a young accordionist Stan Blout who was playing with Joe White Orchestra.

Stan Blout wrote Jacqueline Waltz and another one that didn't have a name. The band played both of these tunes at engagements.

Lyrics have been added to the unnamed waltz for an appearance on TV's popular Polka Varieties show. They were written by Jack Tankovich, saxophone player and vocalist. The song soon caught on as the "Waltz of Love" and Joe White Orchestra released a 45 rpm recording of it.

Joe White turned his band over to Stan Blout in 1966. In 1969 The Stan Blout Orchestra released Polka Sounds of the 70s album, featuring the Waltz of Love. It soon became a waltz standard and has been recorded and played over and over again for the past four decades.

Jam sessions regulars at Spring Hill hall

At our SNPJ Spring Hill hall we have jam sessions at most every event hosted by Slovene-American Club. For March Days weekend event musicians from around the country join-in the fun an play with such a passion and uplifting energy that everyone present either dances - or taps with their feet or fingers - to the cheerful beat of polkas and waltzes.

However, there are some musicians jamming at our Spring Hill hall on a regular basis and this post is devoted to them, to thank them and show our appreciation - for sharing their music with the rest of us.

Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame

My visit to the National Cleveland style Polka Hall of Fame in Euclid - dedicated to the preservation and promotion of polka music, 'the happiest sound around' - was memorable.

The Polka Hall of Fame and Museum is located in the historic, former City Hall of Euclid, Ohio, in close proximity to the Collinwood neighborhood where leading polka musicians lived such as Frankie Yankovic, Johnny Vadnal, Johnny Pecon and Eddie Habat. The Museum has free admission and is open five days a week.

Even though I've only been learning about the North American polka music scene for the last two years or so, I've seen many familiar faces and names at this international Polka Hall of Fame.

The American Slovenian Polka Foundation, which operates the Museum, was founded in 1987. A volunteer board of trustees is elected by the present 1600 members. The trustees represent all segments of polka music, including musicians, promoters, cultural societies, disc jockeys, and button accordion players.

The Cleveland-Style polka music has its roots in folk music from Slovenia and the influence of American musicians, which has given this polka music style universal appeal and popularity. In the same was as English and Irish music on American ground has evolved into country music style, in the same way polka represents the music of Central Europe.

During Thanksgiving weekend, the Polka Hall of Fame produces an annual awards show. Members vote for annual categories such as Recording of the Year, Lifetime Achievement recipients, and the all-time greates polka hits among others. The honorees receive a Crystal Award trophy. The Lifetime Achievement award is the highest honor presented and includes enshrinement in the Polka Hall of Fame.
